Pursuing a career as a pet groomer can offer its candidates a life of adventure and, why not, some profit along the way. The professional pet groomer is required to follow standards that not even a veterinarian is required to follow. A candidate for pet groomer will be doing an important service for society and become a sought after professional for pet owners who are close to their pets. A groomer in the trade will have to develop special hands on methods and techniques for the job, as well as observe each animal carefully for unique handling methods. It is important to note that professional grooming is no pet game, and a degree of responsibility is required from every candidate.
Grooming pets is generally a task that veterinarians and breeders do not get involved with. Groomers usually get a chance to get close to animals and become aware of their unique physical and emotional traits, which they must then pass on to the owner. In some countries, the pet groomer is responsible for an accurate diagnosis of the animal being groomed, so as to determine that no harm has been intentionally inflicted on the animal. In case abuse of some kind is detected, he would be required to report it to the authorities.
One of the special skills inherent in every groomer is the ability to tell what type of coat corresponds with every breed. The Labrador, for instance, has two different coats. The first is a short furry coat close to the skin that provides warmth during the cold months. The second, outer coat is made up of long hair and acts more as a water repellent. The skill of the groomer would need to be put in place in order to tell how long the coat would need to be, and how it should look. A coat cut too short may result in health problems for the animal such as dry skin, diseases, and even skin cancer.
If you believe you are a candidate for a professional pet grooming career, there are a few options available to start you off on the right path. Depending on which country you’re from, there are pet grooming schools you can attend in the United States and Europe. If you live in a country where these schools are not available, consider taking a course online. Once the course is completed, you will be issued a certificate which you could then use to become certified. Certification is not required in every state, or country, but if available it will certainly add to your reputation and credibility.
Professional pet grooming may turn into a profitable line of work, in which you choose what species of animals you wish to work with and what kinds of rates you will be charging. It may prove very useful for you to do some research in your area first. For example, if there are many dog groomers, yet a limited amount of cat groomers, perhaps working with cats would prove more lucrative for your new business.
